The John Cooper Residence occupies a special place in the history of R.G. Chan & Associates, representing one of the firm's most enduring client relationships. More than a residential commission, the project reflects a partnership built on trust, continuity, and shared aspirations over several decades.
When the first commission was undertaken in 1980, Mr. John Cooper was living and working in Singapore as Manager of Cavotec. Together with his Filipina wife, Teresita, he envisioned establishing a family residence in Baguio City while continuing his professional career abroad. At a time when international communication was far more challenging than it is today, the project required a strong working relationship founded on confidence, commitment, and clear communication.
The success of the original residence led to two subsequent commissions, making the Cooper Residence one of the rare projects in the firm's portfolio to evolve through three distinct phases of development. Each engagement responded to changing family needs and lifestyle requirements, while preserving the architectural continuity and character of the home. Through these successive commissions, the residence grew organically into a more complete and refined living environment.
The first phase established the principal two-story residence. The second expanded the home vertically with a third level that introduced additional bedrooms and flexible living spaces. The final phase extended the residence laterally, incorporating covered carports and a spacious terrace with gazebo, creating enhanced opportunities for leisure, entertaining, and outdoor enjoyment.
Beyond its physical evolution, the Cooper Residence demonstrates the lasting value of a strong architect-client relationship. The confidence shown by Mr. and Mrs. Cooper through three separate commissions remains one of the most meaningful expressions of professional trust an architect can receive.
After a successful international career, Mr. Cooper retired in 2003 and chose to make Baguio City his permanent home. Today, more than four decades after the first commission, the friendship between John Cooper and Raffy Chan continues. The project serves as a reminder that architecture is ultimately about people, relationships, and the privilege of helping clients create homes that support their lives through changing seasons and circumstances. Few rewards in professional practice are as fulfilling as seeing a client become a lifelong friend.
